To say that Fleet Foxes didn’t disappoint
last night is a total understatement. I was trying to explain the feel of their performance to a friend, but it is very difficult to put into words.
The tightness and quality of the band playing together was pretty much as good as a studio recording, but in no way does that mean they just went up there and played their songs exactly like the albums. Not at all. I was taken aback by how differently good it was. The main feeling of every song was there, but things were changed. Like certain phrasing, instrumentation, tempo, and drum beats.
During The Shrine/An Argument once it really kicks in full band, Joshua Tillman-the drummer-started playing a real heavy drum beat. Almost like Metallica or something. When this happened I was like, “Oh my God”; just stunned. And to add to that, they added a whole other verse after “…washing off my name from your throat.” that isn’t in the studio recording. Goosebumps all over. Whole night.
Robin came out for an encore and played a song he had written a few weeks ago called I Let You. It was a ballad in some kind of D# open tuning. I’ve never heard chord progressions like the ones in that song. They were rich and beautiful and I felt like I was witnessing greatness. I could say the same thing about the entire evening’s performances.
It was like the feeling I got when I heard Fleet Foxes for the first time.
